Abstrak Kajian
Objectives: This research attempted to investigate and identify the level of depressions and level of spirituality among Malay elderly lived in institutions. Method: This research has been conducted by using quantitative method and it was utilized a survey design by using self-report questionnaire which are depression, anxiety and stress scale (DASS-21), the spirituality checklist (SPC), and spiritual well being scales (SWBS). 142 Malay elderly are selected from 5 institutions located around few areas in peninsular Malaysia. The participants were 71 male and 71 female aged 60 years old and above. Data gained was analyzed by using descriptive analysis and spearman correlation test. Results: The results of the research show that most of elderly lived in institutions are having mild to extremely severe level of depression and moderate to high level of spirituality. In addition, it’s also found that there are negative associations between those two factors with significant p-value (r=-0.553). praying alone, exercise and reading spiritual materials such as al-Quran and motivation books are the three highest of spiritual practices used among participants. Conclusions: It can be concluded that level of depressions and level of spirituality among Malay elderly people who lived institutions is on level of concern since the percentage of level of depression, mild to extremely and level of spirituality, moderate to high represent more than half of the populations. If these variables been ignored by responsible personnel, it will lead to reducing in terms of life satisfaction of the elderly.
