ABSTRACT
Background: Low back pain (LBP) is a significant health concern among the elderly population, affecting their quality of life and functional ability. Understanding the prevalence and associated factors of LBP is essential for effective management and prevention strategies. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of LBP and explore the potential relationships between sociodemographic characteristics, socioeconomic factors, work history, leisure participation, and LBP among elderly residents in care facilities in Malaysia.
Methods: One hundred and six (n=106) elderly age ranging from 55 to more than 80 years old participated in this cross-sectional study through purposive sampling. A set of questionnaires consists of 3 sections were given to the participants. A consists of sociodemographic data, section B consists of socioeconomic status, section C consists of The Malay Version of Standardized Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (M-SNMQ) and Section D consists of Modified Interest Checklist assessment. To determine the associations between LBP and the variables involved, the data was gathered and analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 28.0, with cross-tabulation, Chi-square, and Fisher's Exact tests performed.
Results: The prevalence of low back pain was 31.1% among elderly living in care facilities. In addition, 46 of the respondents (43.3%) received education until primary school. There are 80 blue-collared workers (75.5%) and 61 of the respondents (57.5%) had been working for 10 to 20 years. There are 51 respondents (48.1%) who are currently participating in walking and watching television as their interest during leisure time. Almost half of the respondents, 52 (49.1%) would like to pursue walking and watching television in the future and present day.
Conclusions: Apart from work history and leisure activities, there is a significant correlation between the prevalence of low back pain and sociodemographic and socioeconomic characteristics in elderly care facilities. It is advised to conduct further research to apply these study characteristics to the general community of older people.
