Abstrak Kajian
The main purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence adolescents in their involvement of social problems at Sekolah Tunas Bakti (STB) and Taman Seri Puteri (TSP), Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Social problem referred as a negative behavior that violates the norms of society and neither brings any benefits to themselves, families and communities. In addition, this study also aimed to identify types of social problems that most committed by trainees as well as the different contributing factors between male and female trainees. Lastly, this study aimed to find out whether STB and TSP staff played their roles in helping to improve trainees’ behavior. A total of 19 trainees and 2 staffs participated in this study through purposive sampling technique. Whereas, the data collection method used was semi-structured interview, where a set interview questions were prepared in advance to act as a guideline for researcher during the interview with informants. After that, the data were collected and analyzed in the form of transcript and arranged according to the predetermined theme. Findings of this study showed that the main factor that influenced trainees to involve in social problems was personal factor compared to family, peers, environment, sexual abuse and media factors. However, the additional for both informants were different whereby male informants were more influenced by their peer factor whereas female informants by family factor. Next, social problems that most commited by informants were smoking followed by drinking alcohol, drug abuse, running away from home, truancy, theft, loitering and fights. Research findings also found out that STB and TSP did play their role in helping to improve trainees’ behavior. Finally, the researcher also suggested some recommendations to family, school, community and the government in curbing social problems among adolescents that is ever-increasing.
