A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIAL SUPPORT WITH THE QUALITY OF LIFE AMONG ELDERLY IN RUMAH SERI KENANGAN CHERAS, SELANGOR Nur Syazleen Md Jelaini, Muhammad Hibatullah Romli, Norafisyah Makhdzir Abstract Background: This cross-sectional study was conducted towards an elderly in Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheras, Selangor related to socio-demographic data and social support with their quality of life. The involvement of socio-demographic data for each individual represent their basic background information. As a human, needs to have social activities as this will support one’s well-being that affecting the quality of life. Objective: To evaluate the association of social support and quality of life and the influence of sociodemographic factor on the association among older people residing at the Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheras, Selangor. Method: Two standardised instruments were included as part of the questionnaires which are World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment, Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF) and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support in Bahasa Malaysia (MSPSS-M). Results: Data collected from both tools has been analyzed and associated with socio-demographic data shown level of education and current health status having significant at p-value <0.05. As result social support from MSPSS-M and level of education are independently signification with quality of life. Conclusion: This study shown that social support has been proven to be a factor contributing the effect of quality of life. In addition of other socio-factor contributing towards quality of life of the older residents at one institution. Therefore, a programme or activity can be plan at the location to help the older residents to raise their social interaction level to increase their quality of life.
