STRESS EFFECTS TO PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH ON ADOLESCENT GIRLS IN TAMAN SERI PUTERI KUCHING

Abstrak Kajian


ABSTRACT Purpose: The aim of study is to know stress effects to physical and mental health of adolescent girls in TSPK with objective that is to find causes of stress as well as to know stress level in order to help JKM find ways to implementing related program in the future. Scope: Stress has been known as physical and mental changer agent especially among adolescent girls at the early age. They are frequently have to cope with various stressors that could be potential threats to their healthy development and well-being. Most important mental health consequences of stress in adolescent girls, such as depression, anxiety and stress itself are reviewed. Physiological mechanisms through which stress exerts its effects on health, as well as some physical health outcomes, such as weak immune system and hormonal imbalance are described. Methods: The study participated by 25 of adolescent girls in TSPK and conducted using quantitative research design with simple random sampling. Malay version of DASS 21 by JKMNS Counseling and psychology units, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) by S. Cohen, T. Kamarack, & R. Mermelstein, Physical Symptoms Questionnaire by Paramount Wellness Institute, Personal Stress Inventory: Top Ten Stressors by B.L. Seaward and Malay version of Self-assessment: Life Skills scale by Mohd Razali Salleh was utilized to obtain data related to stress effect. Results: Stress effects to mental health shows 52% moderate on stress, 32% highly severe on anxiety, 32 % moderate on depression. Stress effects to physical health score 88% high on weak immune system (Dizzy spells) and score 88% high on hormonal imbalance (pimples, muscle tension and heart palpitation). Intrapersonal problems affect 50% of adolescent girl’s physical health and affect 20% of their mental health. Level of stress score 52% moderate. Conclusions: Study found that stress effects to physical and mental health of adolescent girls in TSPK is more to negative rather than positive. The stress effect to mental health is more to anxiety while physical health shows various symptoms. Recommendations: Stress programs should be based on adolescent girl need and life skills are recommended to help adolescent girls in TSPK reduce their stress.
