Abstrak Kajian


Background of study: Depression is the second cause of death as reported by World Health Organization (WHO) on 2012. It is proved that having disabled child will affecting the parent’s mental due to the higher level of care are needed. Thus, the objective of this study is to measure level of depression and comparing level of depression between the two types of disability among Malaysian population. Method: This was a cross-sectional study. 120 samples (n = 120) of parent having disabled child were taken from the Hospital Sultan Haji Hamad Shah, Temerloh and Community-Based Rehabilitation Centre in Pahang state. The demographic data of the parents were asked and the levels of depression were measured using a self-administered standardized questionnaire Beck Depression Inventory Malay Version (BDI-Malay). The test data then were analyzed by SPSS Version 18 software using descriptive and inferential statics. Result: There is 52% (n = 62) depression cases noted and 48% (n = 58) is normal. It is found that there are three level of depression resulted which are 48.3% (n = 58) were having normal level, 40% (n = 48) mild depression and 11.7% (n = 14) were having borderline clinical depression. When comparing between the two disabilities, there is no statistically difference in the level of depression between parents of physical disabled child and parents of intellectual disabled child (p>0.05). meanwhile, for the association of individual characteristics and the level of depression, there is statistically significant association between level (p = 0.003), marital status (p<0.001) and child’s age (p = 0.03) to the level of depression Conclusion: Parents having disabled child have poor risk on mental health problem whether they are having physical or intellectual disabled child. Therefore, every parents of disabled child should aware and ready to cope with problem arise and strategies should be developed by health care professional to prevent deterioration of parental mental health.
