There is only a few studies had done about leisure activity among Malay elderly. According to Minhat& Amin (2012), such study is needed since this aspect never being explored among the increasing Malaysian elderly. Occupational therapy is a health profession that helps elderly people to participate in leisure activities and it is a fundamental and core tasks in occupational therapy profession. Models and speculations regarding leisure participation that was expanded in Western countries were taken by Malaysian occupational therapists. Nevertheless, the theories and models about leisure participation that were taken by Malaysia’s occupational therapist are not appropriate and reflects cultural value for Malaysia’s older peoples due to differences in cultural and personal belief (Yang et al., 2006). As a result, it will result to the lack of significant effect in applying occupational therapist treatment. This study was aim to identify factors influence, benefits, barriers and pattern of leisure participation amongst older people in institution. It is hoping that the finding from this study will enhance life satisfaction, physical health and well being, and quality of life to the older people, especially older people who are living in the institution.
